Brian Orter

Founder, Owner
Brian started his career in theater and New York City's iconic clubs. He founded BOLD in 2008, using storytelling to shape commercial and hospitality projects globally. Outside of work, he is president of Pilots to the Rescue, a non-profit helping to transport pets for adoption, and supports educational and community causes such as the National Gay Pilots Association, Camp Treetops, North Country School, and The Center. He is an IFR rated pilot and is commission chair for the Provincetown Airport in Massachusetts.

Gary Wong

Creative Director
A New York City and Hong Kong native with a background in architecture, Gary brings a unique perspective to lighting design, having worked on high-profile projects like Journey to the Edge at Hudson Yards and The Well. Since joining BOLD in 2014, he has overseen the creative direction of projects globally and co-founded the Asian Lighting Community (ALC) in 2022 to support and empower Asians in the lighting industry.

Mai Shimizu

Studio Leader
Born in Tokyo and raised in New York, Mai brings a unique and innovative approach to lighting design, having led high-profile projects like Bahrain Airport's Falcon Gold Lounge and The Brooklyn Tower. With over 18 years of experience, she combines technical expertise with creativity and also serves as Director of Outreach for the Asian Lighting Community (ALC), supporting the careers of Asians in the lighting industry.

Sunhee Lim

Studio Leader
With over 20 years of lighting design experience and a Master's in Arhcitectural Lighting from Parsons, Sunhee has led projects like Nobu Doha and W Hotel Abu Dhabi, specializing in Michelin-star restaurants, luxury hotels, and high-end residences. Since joining BOLD in 2016, she has contributed to iconic projects such as the W Hotel in New York and Nobu Hotels in Atlanta, showcasing her ability to adapt and execute complex design concepts worldwide.
